Typewriters for kids: The Lonely Typewriter by Peter Ackerman

I came across Peter Ackerman’s The Lonely Typewriter (2014) by accident, and I was delighted to see a story about a typewriter aimed at children who are unlikely to be familiar with such antiquated technology.

We're told the story of Pablo, a young boy who has homework to do. When his computer breaks, the boy's mother shows him her old typewriter, which he uses to type his essay, impressesing his teacher and all of his friends.

The story features an Olivetti Lettera 22, which made me nostalgic because I own an Olivetti Lettera 35. I albo like how the typewriter’s story was told as well, and how it served various people over the years, before falling into the hands of the boy's mother.

It is a truly heartwarming story about how a boy who was initially skeptical of the typewriter grows to love it and wants to carry on the familial typing tradition that will melt the heart of any typewriter enthusiast. It inspires me to write my own children's story with a typewriter as the main character 🙂.
